The Sierra Estrella stretch across this view from Alta Ridge in South Mountain Park and Preserve, Phoenix, Arizona. The Gila River Valley is in the foreground.

The Sierra Estrella, as seen from Alta Ridge in South Mountain Park, looking southwest.  The Gila River flows from left to right (south to north) through the valley at the base.  The entire range is a block of rock.
The high, pointed peak near the center of the photo is Montezuma Sleeping (elevation ~4200 feet, 1280 meters).  To the left (south) of that, about one-fourth of the width of the photo across, is Butterfly Mountain (elevation 4119 feet, 1255 meters).  Quartz Peak is one of its summits.  You can look back from there to where this picture was taken, for the reverse view.  Or you can see the range from a different perspective in a view from space.
