In this northeast-looking view from near the summit of South
Mountain, the Papago Buttes are illuminated by late afternoon sun. Composed
mostly of age , they are gigantic blocks of rock
tilted away by the uplifting of the South Mountain . All we see now
are their tips protruding through the of the valley floor.
These form the scenic context for the Desert
Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo, and Papago Park.
