Desolate looking (to some people) hills like these in the White Tank Mountains are common in the around Phoenix.  The magnificent sense of isolation and silence they reveal is something that can only be experienced in person.  If you like barren vistas like this, take a look at Shadow Mountain.
   From just looking at this picture, it is hard to believe that a city of about three million people (Phoenix metropolitan area) is just a few miles off to the right.
